A development programme to accelerate the careers of unscripted producers through paid placements, commissioning insight, training and commissioning and industry mentoring

Factual Fast Track is a reputation-building career development programme that fast tracks established, ambitious producers to create business winners for the nations and regions. 

This unique scheme provides networking opportunities to raise profiles, training sessions to extend skills, and industry and commissioning mentoring to build the confidence of the best producers, producer/directors, series producers, executive producers and development producers. At its heart is an industry placement in a stretch role that will develop the Fast Tracker’s career and elevate their CV. 

 

Everyone with the relevant experience is welcome to apply. Our ambition is to create a diverse Fast Track cohort. We want to improve representation of ethnic diversity, disability and socio-economic backgrounds and have broadened the range of experience required to apply for the scheme. For the Welsh scheme, the ability to speak Welsh is not mandatory but two places will be ring-fenced for fluent Welsh speakers with excellent language communication skills and who are committed to working bilingually.

 

Factual Fast Track runs annually in Wales and the West of England to ensure unscripted production continues to go from strength to strength.

  • What does the programme involve?
    Successful candidates will benefit from: Curated production placements in a stretch role on productions that will raise profiles, expand networks and develop professional and leadership skills. Two mentors: a commissioner from a stakeholder broadcaster offering strategic and industry insight and advice, and an expert industry mentor to offer operational and additional support while in the placement role. Career coaching. Exclusive access to commissioners at stakeholder broadcasters. Continuous one-to-one support. Being part of a supportive cohort of peers working in factual production in Wales and the West of England. Targeted training such as: Understanding formats and how to create returnable content; Storytelling and scripting; Creative leadership, managing people, negotiation and communication; Personal impact and resilience; Pitching and presentation.

    Producers with a flexible mindset who can think strategically about their career progression Creative and innovative factual programme makers or developers with a passion for storytelling and industry insight and knowledge.   • Who should apply?
    Factual Fast Track’s purpose is to build confidence in and raise the profile of Welsh and the West of England’s factual production talent with the ambition to raise their profiles and become business winners for the Nations and regions. To apply, you must be working in the unscripted sector in Wales or the West of England and you will be: Producer/directors, producers, series producers and development producers with proven work experience in unscripted production in Wales or the West of England. Less experienced producers who need help breaking through to the next stage of their careers. Working in any unscripted genre. This includes but is not limited to: factual entertainment, daytime, documentary, specialist factual, or development. Able to demonstrate strategic thinking. A stand-out programme maker with editorial and creative flair. Editorially and creatively confident, and willing to push boundaries and take risks to challenge assumptions. Innovative and have original ideas which have been instrumental in creating shows loved by both audiences and broadcasters. Passionate about and have experience of creating or working in production teams with a broad range of voices and backgrounds A strategic leader - or have the potential to be - with the skills and resilience to lead collaborative and creative teams. Able to arrange for the provision of a supporting statement (200-300 words) from a previous or current employer or an Executive Producer. Able to participate in this development programme. You must be available to accept an appropriate placement and commit to attending between one and two training or commissioning events every month. We are looking for diversity of voice, insights, and experience. We encourage applications from under-represented groups in the TV industry, including those from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities, people from lower socio-economic backgrounds and returners-to-work.
  • What is the time commitment for Factual Fast Track?
    Factual Fast Track lasts one year. Each month there will be one face to face training day in either Cardiff (BBC) or Bristol (Channel 4) that Fast Trackers will be required to attend. Productions are expected to support attendance. There will be 1-2 lunchtime online masterclasses from expert programme makers each month i.e. Charlotte Brookes (Sort Your Life Out), Anna Lewellyn (The Dog House), Ben Kelly (Netflix), Harjeet Chhokar (Amazon), Iain Scollay (Murder Trial), Alison Kirkham (Apple). These are hosted by Fast Trackers from each of the two Fast Track cohorts - Wales & West and Scotland and Northern Ireland. The placement will last between 12 and 24 weeks. The length and timing of the placement will depend on productions available throughout the year.
  • How much does the programme cost?
    There is no cost to be part of Factual Fast Track. At the heart of the Fast Track experience is a paid production or development placement. This is a real job (not shadowing) and is paid at a market rate set by Factual Fast Track. The length and timing of the placement will depend on productions available throughout the year, and Fast Trackers will be expected to cover all reasonable travel expenses.
